soil vent pipe

Apr. 12, 2021

What is a soil vent pipe?

Soil vent pipe (SVP), also known as drainage pipe or ventilation and sewage pipe, is usually a vertical pipe used to remove sewage and greywater in buildings. It is usually connected to the outside of the building (although it can be installed inside) and connects the underground drainage system directly above the roof gutter.

Soil vent pipes can remove waste from toilets, showers, bathrooms and sinks, and can also release odors to the top of the building through the chimney drain without causing nuisance. The duct's vents also allow air to enter the internal drainage system to promote the process of aerobic sewage digestion, prevent the siphon effect, and allow gravity to flow freely.

The SVP must maintain a sufficient downward slope along its length to keep liquid and entrained solids flowing freely to the drain. If it is not possible to tilt down, a sump with a "sewage jet" pump can be installed.

Traditionally, Soil vent pipes are made of cast iron.

Frequently Asked Questions about Soil vent pipes

Should the Soil vent pipes be vented?

The sewage pipe is a key part of any drainage system. If there is no ventilation pipe, when the waste water moves down the pipe, a vacuum will be formed behind the waste water. This will force the water out of the U-bend, which in turn will allow stench and gas to enter the house.

What is the purpose of Soil vent pipes?

The ventilation system or duct vent is composed of many pipes that lead from the waste pipe to the outdoors, usually through the roof. Ventilation holes provide a way to release sewer gas into the house instead of inside the house.

Can rainwater pipes be connected to Soil vent pipes?

Additional rainwater pipes can be discharged to the ground or into new or existing underground pipes. If you decide to allow rainwater pipes to drain to the ground, you need to make sure that the water does not damage the foundation (for example...it is forbidden to discharge surface water into dirt drains or sewers).
